Brushed Brazilian slate hearths are perfect for those looking to site a wood burner or multi-fuel stove in a prominent position in a room. Even if you do not have a fireplace opening, these hearths can be used to zone off the area where your burner or stove will sit. Equally suited to an inset fireplace, these slate slabs can be easily cut to achieve a custom fit wherever needed.
The front edge of our slate slabs is cut straight and square, but they can be easily polished and smoothed with light sanding, followed by finer sanding if a more polished finish is desired.
Traditionally slate has been used around fireplaces for hundreds of years, and with the quality that can be obtained from a Brazilian slate this trend will continue for many years. There is no need to change to inferior substitutes when you can still get quality material at an affordable price.

Slate is a not suitable material for open fires or anywhere naked flames or direct heat can come in contact with its surface.
As slate is a natural product and each piece will have its own particular characteristics, the texture of the surface can vary and may also contain natural flaws, with slight laminations and veins of quartz and iron pyrite please be aware of this when ordering.

The shade of the final product will differ compared to the sample you may receive or the images shown on this website, all natural products have colour variation within and between different batches. You must ensure that you are happy with the colour variation of the product you have received before you start laying, as after installation exchange will no longer be possible.
Do not use acidic cleaners on natural stone as they can cause permanent, irreparable, damage to the colour and structure of the stone.
Do Slate Hearths Scratch Easily?
Slate hearths can quite easily be scratched, these scratches are more visible on honed surfaces compared to natural riven, but they will just fade and disappear to some extend over time, or if you apply a coat of slate oil this will keep you hearth looking perfect even if under heavy use.
Is Slate Good For A Fireplace Hearth?
Yes we believe slate is the best material for Fireplace hearths and has been used for centuries with great success. Always look for a good quality slate supplier who is sourcing from either Brazilian quarries or if your budget will stretch from home grown Welsh slate Quarries. I would avoid any Chinese slate as the quality does not tend to be good enough and I would questions the longevity of the material.
How To Clean A Black Slate Fireplace Hearth?
lack slate is extremely easy to maintain and cleaning will generally consist of a dust pan and brush or a wet mop and soapy water if heavily soiled. On occasion you can apply a coat of Slate Oil to bring back the lustre of the natural slate, this will also offer some protection against staining.

How To Measure For A Fireplace Surround?
We would always recommend creating a plywood or cardboard template before starting to cut your Slate hearth blank. You need to fully measure all sides of the opening and establish what over hangs you are going to need to meet current building regs, link to guide below:

When you have transferred these measurements onto the plywood, cut this out carefully and then test this template in the fireplace opening to ensure you have correctly measured. When this is correct the template can be used to mark out the Slate ready for installation.
How To Level A Fireplace Hearth?
You have two options when it comes to bedding down your fire place hearth, you can go for traditional sand and cement mortar mixed at a ratio of 4 parts sand to 1 part cement or alternatively you can use a pre-mixed powered tile adhesive. If you need build up one end of the hearth to help with levelling, it sometimes might be easier with sand and cement mortar, as tile adhesives have a maximum depth.
